FIRST LINE OF DEFENSE

So yesterday I came home from a very short day at work. When I get home I see the October issue of Essence in my mailbox with a very pretty and purple Mary J. Blidge on the cover.

After I do all of my little household ish, I sift through the pages. Besides reading about all of the 16 black women working for the Obama adminstration (so happy...tears of joy and pride streaming from my face), the healthy living section, "Fighting Breast Cancer" catches my eye.

When I skimmed through the article I was alarmed at the statistics . Black women are less likely to get breast cancer but more likely to die from it! WTF!!!! Basically what it boils down to is your diet and getting mamograms. But let's focus on the first part.

Sistas and all women for that matter, our biggest line of defense against this monster is to eat smart and exercise. Big suprise huh??? According to Otis W. Barley eating too much and moving too little are the top two changeable risk factors for breast cancer. Obesity "fuels breast, uterine and other cancers driven by hormones". One study found that breast cancers risk rises 40 percent in adult women who gain 21 to 30 pounds after age 30. So we need to use that gym membership ASAP!!!

The good thing about this news is that we can control it. I know how it is to carry around more that a few pounds. When I was heavy I always felt tired. Not for nothing I really blame it on the tasty but otherwise shitty food I stuffed in my mouth every 5 seconds. What we put into our bodies nowadays is unreal and our system is not equipped to handle these science projects we scarf down our throats.

What the article suggests (and I cosign with) is to develop an action plan to whittle your weight down. It's the usual: incorporate a little more vigourous exercise into your schedule and eat more meals that are healthy and correctly portioned. You know the drill eat more: fruits, green veggies, lean protein, yada yada yada.

I also recommend eating more whole natural foods and staying away from refined foods (ie. high fructose corn syrup, white carbs, etc).

I know all the popeyes, pizzerias, spanish spots, and chinese food restaurants smell good and taste delightful but it can also bring you to an untimely end.

Eat right folks!!!!

THEY'RE NOT ALL BAD

Ok so in previous posts I talked about the benefits of eating brown carbs and how they stabilize your blood sugar levels and keep you fuller longer. I also noted how white carbs have a high glycemic value and peak your energy levels which later cause your body to crash. Well, despite the bad rap that white carbs get, they do come in handy. However, the key to eat them correctly is the timing.

After you finish an intense workout session your glycogen stores (your body's main fuelsource) are depleted and need to be replenished ASAP. The three hours following your workout your body is more open to accepting nutrients and it needs them quickly to recover. In this case the best foods to restore your body's energy levels are white carbs.

Huh!?!?!? Blasphemy you say? Well no it isn't.

High glycemic foods are an ideal choice to replenish your carb levels. Because white carbs are absorbed into the blood stream quickly your body makes better use of the energy. Studies show that poor car replenishment post workout leads to reduced training performances in later training bouts.

A good source to replenish your carb and protein levels are electrolyte drinks like power-aide. However, food or fruit would better fuel your body.

Happy Monday Folks...it's a gorgeous day here in Jersey and I am loving it ...ttyl peeps

A TASTE WORTH DYING FOR?

I am not making this ish up all. Hungry well if you're in Arizona how about eating at the Heart Attack Grill. No seriously.
Courtesy of AOL Hot Searches

"At the Heart Attack Grill, the health un-conscious can nosh on huge burgersfrench fries fried in pure lard, cold beer and full sugar soda.
The hospital-themed restaurant, where waitresses are 'nurses'

and customers are 'patients'

has become famous for their 8,000-calorie Quadruple Bypass Burger
In comparison, a McDonald's Big Mac has a mere 540 calories. A few orders of the Bypass Burger and you'll be getting free meals in no time. Customers over 350 pounds eat for free!"

I'm mad at the 350lbs eat free...lmao... I'm sure whoever qualifies for that must sign some sort of waiver.
I mean I get it with the sexy waitresses but 8,000 calories...dammm... Well...If you like it...I don't love it!! That ish is just plain nasty

Lmao!!!

UMMMM ARE YOU FALLING FOR THIS??!! This is the Big Mac Snack Wrap. It is the “healthier” alternative to the Big Mac. The Mac Snack Wrap combines beef (half of a 4-oz. Quarter Pounder patty) with its signature Big Mac sauce, lettuce, Cheddar and Monterrey Jack cheeses, pickles and onions in a warm flour tortilla. The suggested price is $1.89; it has 350 calories (21 grams of fat). While this does have less fat (29 grams) and calories (540 calories ) then the traditional Big Mac it still has 21 freaking grams of fat!!! Plus, the wrap is small and cheap so a customer is more inclined to order two or 3 (with the sauce on the side) thinking this is a much healthier option. So if you order 2 you would have consumed 42 grams of fat and 700 glorious calories in one meal . FYI this is not a beach body friendly meal. Please people do not fall for this gimmick.

Also, just so I am not picking on Mc Donald’s I had to investigate Dunkin Donuts Egg White Turkey Sausage Flatbread Sandwich They claim this is a much more healthier option to jump start your morning. And I have to agree that the nutritional facts are not that bad. It has 6 grams of fat, 19 grams of protein, and 37 grams of carbohydrates, which is fine but the sodium is 820 mg, which is a lot!!!! (Remember why sodium is bad people ). I say that this is an okay choice, but don’t eat this every morning on your way to work. Save it for special occasion like, “ It’s Friday and I get paid today…whoo hoooo!!! or I am still hungover from Thursday night and need something hearty in my stomach!”

HAPPY TUESDAY EVERYONE!!!!

Things that make you go HMMM…

I find it funny how advertisers insult people’s intelligence on a day to day basis case in point. Yesterday I was up late doing laundry and watching Platinum Weddings (one of my favorite shows). I was hungry azz hell so I decided to drink my favorite flavored water (kiwi – strawberry by propel) to soothe my hunger pains. Well all that went down hill when the Sonic commercial came on. I personally don’t find their food appealing because it looks gross but still watching those witty 40 somethings chow down on that lard and talk about nothing made my mouth water. To make matters worse a damn Applebee’s curbside to go commercial came on with the cute and perky waitress waiting on happy and eager customers.

It was at this point that I started fuming. Not only was I hungrier than a minute before but I was pissed at the BOLD FACE LIES these restaurants were selling. I’m not saying that their food doesn’t taste good and that it isn’t as cheap as they advertise. But they are bull shitting the public with the image of their customer.

Now by a show of hands how many customers do you see at your local fast food place or restaurant chain that look like this:or this:I mean really?!!?!? But rather how many people do you know that look like this? In my eyes Mr. Sanders, Ronald Mc Donald, and Dave Thomas (God rest his soul) use the same tactics as the tobacco company to get people to buy their products. I’m sure if you saw a 250lb woman with cellulite on her eye balls gobbing down the #2 at Mc Donald’s with a diet coke you would think twice about ordering…wouldn’t you? NO APOLOGIES here…I'm just saying!!!
