FIRST LINE OF DEFENSE

So yesterday I came home from a very short day at work. When I get home I see the October issue of Essence in my mailbox with a very pretty and purple Mary J. Blidge on the cover.

After I do all of my little household ish, I sift through the pages. Besides reading about all of the 16 black women working for the Obama adminstration (so happy...tears of joy and pride streaming from my face), the healthy living section, "Fighting Breast Cancer" catches my eye.

When I skimmed through the article I was alarmed at the statistics . Black women are less likely to get breast cancer but more likely to die from it! WTF!!!! Basically what it boils down to is your diet and getting mamograms. But let's focus on the first part.

Sistas and all women for that matter, our biggest line of defense against this monster is to eat smart and exercise. Big suprise huh??? According to Otis W. Barley eating too much and moving too little are the top two changeable risk factors for breast cancer. Obesity "fuels breast, uterine and other cancers driven by hormones". One study found that breast cancers risk rises 40 percent in adult women who gain 21 to 30 pounds after age 30. So we need to use that gym membership ASAP!!!

The good thing about this news is that we can control it. I know how it is to carry around more that a few pounds. When I was heavy I always felt tired. Not for nothing I really blame it on the tasty but otherwise shitty food I stuffed in my mouth every 5 seconds. What we put into our bodies nowadays is unreal and our system is not equipped to handle these science projects we scarf down our throats.

What the article suggests (and I cosign with) is to develop an action plan to whittle your weight down. It's the usual: incorporate a little more vigourous exercise into your schedule and eat more meals that are healthy and correctly portioned. You know the drill eat more: fruits, green veggies, lean protein, yada yada yada.

I also recommend eating more whole natural foods and staying away from refined foods (ie. high fructose corn syrup, white carbs, etc).

I know all the popeyes, pizzerias, spanish spots, and chinese food restaurants smell good and taste delightful but it can also bring you to an untimely end.

Eat right folks!!!!

I'M BURNING UP

Hey peeps. Okay so it's official the summer is over. It's time to get back in the groove of things and finish out the rest of the three months strong. Because a new year is coming many peeps are getting the urge to make that last minute transformation before the near year dawns. And I think that's great...

Last week I was working out with two of my girlfriends. They are determined to get their bodies in a sexy backless dress come New Years. As we were doing our exercises they started to feel the burn. Now I wanted to tell them that there was their lactic acid threshold but my memory knew better. I knew it was a depletion of something else and not a buildup of latic acid. Later on that night I reviewed my personal training book and my suspension was right.
When you are lifting weights or working out to the max you begin to feel a burning sensation in your muscles. Many in the fitness world have mistakenly referred to this as lactic acid but it's actually due to an insuffienct amount of oxygen in your tissue not acid pain.

Lactic acid is a good guy because it is a buffer for the hydrogen by-product of muscle that has become ischemic ( lacking oxygen) Muscle ischemia kinda feels like you placed a rubber back on the end of your finger...NUMB AS HELL!!!

During intense workout sessions ischemia occurs and the excess hydrogen builds up which leads to a drop in PH levels which can lead to muscle fatigue. The lactic acid that is produced can be transferred to a neighboring cell that is not ischemic and can be oxidized to yield additional energy.

So next time you hear someone blame it on the lactic acid let em know otherwise..

Speaking of burn...did any of you see burn after reading...I saw it this weekend with my cousin..what a twisted freaking movie...lmao!!!
HAPPY TUESDAY/MONDAY YA'LL!!!

HOW MUCH WOOD CAN A WOOD CHUCK CHUCK....

Hey peeps,

Just so you know there is certain amount of protein that you should have in your diet. Contrary to the atkins and other high protein diets too much protein and not enough carbs is not a good thing...Remba?

Below is the amount of protein you should have based on your training levels.

Tip: To get your weight in kilograms just divide your weight by 2.2.
BW= Bodyweight
Sedentary

.8kg-.9g/kg of BW

Physically Active

1.0-1.2g/kg of BW

Endurance Athlete

1.3-1.5g/kg of BW

BodyBuilding & Strength Training

1.6-2.0g/kg of BW

Children

up to 2g/kg of BW

Pregnant Females

Add 20g to total daily requirements and add 10g if nursing

Beware of eating too much protein. When protein is overwhelmed the kidneys and liver must process this overload.

The kidneys require more water to create urine when the solute concentration is high. This can lead to increase fluid loss and dehydration. Excessive protein consumed over an extended period of time can be detrimental to your body.
So in other words fall back on the meat and eat a balanced meal. Carbs need love too!!
No Apologies Peeps

A TASTE WORTH DYING FOR?

I am not making this ish up all. Hungry well if you're in Arizona how about eating at the Heart Attack Grill. No seriously.
Courtesy of AOL Hot Searches

"At the Heart Attack Grill, the health un-conscious can nosh on huge burgersfrench fries fried in pure lard, cold beer and full sugar soda.
The hospital-themed restaurant, where waitresses are 'nurses'

and customers are 'patients'

has become famous for their 8,000-calorie Quadruple Bypass Burger
In comparison, a McDonald's Big Mac has a mere 540 calories. A few orders of the Bypass Burger and you'll be getting free meals in no time. Customers over 350 pounds eat for free!"

I'm mad at the 350lbs eat free...lmao... I'm sure whoever qualifies for that must sign some sort of waiver.
I mean I get it with the sexy waitresses but 8,000 calories...dammm... Well...If you like it...I don't love it!! That ish is just plain nasty

…..The Father, The Son, And The Holy Biscuit...Amen!!!

As I sit here watching our President give the commencement speech at Notre Dame I am filled with a a few emotions and thoughts.
1) PRIDE – To see my President at my Alma Mater (Go IRISH!!)
2) DISGUST – At the controversy of him giving the speech (COUGH…BUSH…COUGH….CAPITAL PUNISHMENT.)
3) AND FOOD

I know you are like, “Huh!! What does food have to do with the President speaking at the number one Catholic school in the country?”

Well a few weeks ago at my job, I was lucky to sit through a Lunch & Learn. One of the jewels the speaker dropped was the history of eating three times a day. According to the speaker back in the 1200’s the Church wooed people to Christianity during the crusades by offering food three times a day. Every time the local countrymen ate (courtesy of the church) they paid homage and reverence to God…THE FATHER, THE SON, AND THE HOLY SPIRIT.

However it is 2009 and it’s time to eat smarter. Eating three times a day is not good for you. When we wait five to six hours to eat, we send our blood sugar levels in a tail spin. Waiting too long to eat can cause your blood sugar levels to dip low which can cause fatigue. Also when people wait long to satisfy their hunger they tend to overeat and consume nutrient poor food. This as a result causes people’s blood sugar levels to spike and your pancreas releases insulin into the blood stream. Over time eating inconsistently and poorly can cause a person’s body to lose insulin sensitivity. High levels of insulin helps convert the excess sugar into fat…HELLO DIMPLES ON YOUR BUTT CHEEKS!!!! Solution – Eat more often and eat smaller meals. I eat every 2 to 3 hours . Think about it..this way. Your body is like a store. The quicker a store sells through it’s inventory, the more profitably it becomes, and the more inventory it needs to stay in business !!! Well your body is the same way and your inventory is small healthy portions. The more you eat (healthy….that is), the faster your body turns it over, and the more it needs to keep going.

So go to your local farmer's market and get some healthy and hearty eats!!!

Enjoy your Sunday everyone :)

Food For Thought

Sodium consumption es muy importante. Consuming too much sodium contributes to high blood pressure. Over time, a high amount of salt can lead to congestive heart failure, cirrhosis (chronic liver disease), as well as kidney disease. The American Heart and Health Association recommends that you only have 2300mg of sodium.

Well, did you know that the Premium Grilled Chicken Sandwich at Mc Donald’s has 1470 mg of sodium? Oh yeah and don’t forget your medium fries (270mg), three ketchup packets (330mg), medium sized diet coke (45mg), and because your fries were not salty enough one salt packet (270mg). This amounts to a whopping total of 2385mg. So guess what? You are already maxed out on your sodium intake for the day. Oh I’m sorry, maybe you're one of the people that go to Mc Donald’s and have the salad. Well then here's some information for you- The Premium Grilled Chicken Salad has 960 mg of sodium. But, let’s not forget about that fat free balsamic dressing (730 mg) for a total of 1690mg which is 70% of your daily intake for only one meal!!!
A better choice from the Mc Dic’s menu (as far as salt is concerned) is a hamburger, (520mg), small fries (160mg), 1 ketchup packet (110), and a side salad (10mg) for a total of 790 mg of sodium or 34% of your daily allowance. Not to mention, it’s only 500 calories (fat content is another story). Click here to get the all the facts on your favorite eats at Mc D’s . And just to be fair, here is Wendy’s, and here is Burger King (BK’s menu guide is kinda cool btw).

Besides fast food, processed meats (bacon, sausage, and ham), canned soups and veggies have high amounts of sodium too. So choose wisely my friends, it’s for your own good!!!
