LIFE IS UNFAIR

As my father would say, "Wheat..your birth certificate does not say that everything is going to go your way!" He would tell me this when I would have a bad day and things didn't go as planned. We all know life can be unfair and that some people are dealt a better deck of cards than others, but regardless what you have in your hand you have to play it.

This leads me today's post. I've been training my friend for quite a while now. She has been doing the work in the gym as well as following up with her workout and diet outside of our meetings. But still she had no luck. She will tell me that she is following the plan but I would shake my head and go.."Well why aren't you losing the weight?!!?!?"

She told me casually that she had a condition called Polycystic Ovary Syndrome and asked me to follow up on it. Well I never did but she went to a doctor who told her that her continual weight gain is due to this condition and that she needed extra help to help stablize her hormones and bring her on the right track for weight loss.

Polycystic Ovary Syndrome or PCOS is a hormone disorder in which most women not all suffer from enlarged ovaries or they may have small cysts along the edge of the ovary which gives it a polycystic appearance.

The cause of the diesease is unknown but women with the condition have trouble getting pregnant due to infrequent ovulation and suffer from excessive weight gain.

One of the "great" features of this abnormality is obseity which over half of the women with this condition suffer from. What it boils down to is your diet. A study conducted at the University of Pittburgh found that a group of women with PCOS who ate as much as a group of women without the condition gained weight while the other group did not. But when women with PCOS ate less they maintained their weight compared with non PCOS women or ate more. A simple solution to this would be to consume less calories but there is more to the story.

There are many hormonal factors at play with this disease and cannot be pinpointed to one guy but insulin sensitivity is a major player. Insulin is a hormone that stores blood sugar (glucose). Overweight women with PCOS have higher insulin levels than lean women. When the body constantly releases insulin in the long run it turns into trigycerides which is absorbed into the fatty tissue.

I will read the book "The Natural Diet Solution for PCOS and Infertility" by Dr. Nancy Dunne and Bill Slater to see if they offer any ground breaking advise for women that suffer from this disease as it claims to

Until then here are some quick suggestions:

1) Eat nutrient dense food (high fiber, low calories, brown carbs, leafy greens, and low fat) Eat more often and smaller portions too.
2) Take Birth Control.

3) Use Carb Intercept with every carb meal . This is one of my supplements I take on a daily basis and it works. Buy some here. It's super cheap at the Vitamin Shoppe $13 for 120 capsules.

I'll follow-up with this book and give you my thoughts later. Until then enjoy the day peeps!!!

  1. hi C- hmm. i may sound naive with this question -but as i have neverbeen on birth control pills, i don't know much- but does it help you loose weight?

  2. Hi Angela,

Actually it's the opposite. Birth control has estrogen which enables your body to retain extra water. So it's similar to the time frame right before your period. You will experience slight bloating because of the extra hormones.

Try some PMS tea if you are on the pill
